I'm noticing a pattern among seasoned software engineers.
I'm noticing a pattern among seasoned software engineers.
It feels like a game of four corners.
The corners are labeled:
1. Security
2. Mastery
3. Autonomy
4. Meaning
We’ve locked eyes.
Our feet are shifting.
The energy in the room is electric.
We’re preparing to sprint.
Sprint toward...
Security:
Some are over it.
Ready to do less.
Burned out. Tired of the volatility.
This is a season to de-risk. Stack cash.
Buy optionality. Maybe step away entirely.
"I've got nothing to prove."
Mastery:
Lean in and build.
Stay ahead of the curve.
Position ourselves to surf the tsunami.
"This is my moment to do the best work of my career."
Autonomy:
Take control.
Own the upside.
Build what we want.
Answer only to customers.
"Someone will build the first solo, $100M business.
Why not me?"
Meaning:
Values-aligned. Mission-aligned.
Solve real problems for real people.
"When I look back on this season of my life,
will I be proud of how I spent it?"
Each corner will have tradeoffs.
What's right for some won't be right for others.
But just like the game, standing in the middle is the worst place to be.
Indecision is the only guaranteed loss.
