It’s not about the cup.

It’s not about the cup.
This style of cup is common.

I could buy a similar ceramic for $10.

But it’s not about the cup.

It’s what this cup represents.

I bought it at the pre race briefing before my first HURT100 race in 2025.

At the time I laughed to myself.
It felt strange to buy memorabilia before finishing.

If I didn’t finish, it would collect dust in the back of a cabinet.
But if I finished, it would likely become a favorite.

It held my coffee the morning after the race.
Mission accomplished.
Job well done.

It became my go to coffee cup.
A regular reminder of my magical moment.

Well this morning it crashed to the ground.
Shattered to pieces right in front of my family.

I froze.

For a moment my thought was:
“I want to cry.”

But I was also acutely aware I was being watched.

Not just by my wife.
By two kids learning how adults handle frustration, disappointment, and loss.

My reaction was about to set the tone for the morning.

So I took an extra second.

Whole or broken, the cup remains a symbol of my ability to overcome.

First in victory.
Now in disappointment.

Life's most important lesson
is the one it's trying to teach us right now.

So I took a breath.
Swept up the pieces.
Made another cup of coffee.
And kept going.

Because it was never about the cup.
