Say what you want about personality tests. I'm a fan.
Say what you want about personality tests. I'm a fan.
Not because they’re perfect, but because even in their imperfections they help us discover something about ourselves and each other.
I've found the Enneagram to be especially useful in relationships.
For those who know the syntax, I'm an 8w7.
But this post isn't about me.
It's about my wife.
She's an Enneagram 2: the “Helper.”
Years ago, a band wrote a song for each Enneagram type.
The song for Type 2 still brings tears to my eyes.
Why?
First, it captures my wife perfectly.
There is a gentleness and strength to her that the song describes beautifully.
Second, it’s so foreign to me.
This level of empathy and self-sacrifice feels almost impossible to comprehend. Like looking up at the stars. I can admire it, but it feels so far from reach.
More broadly, I love what this represents:
- Our search for self-understanding gave us the Enneagram.
- Our love of stories carried it through generations.
- Our creativity transformed it into art.
- Our ingenuity made it available to anyone with a click.
Pretty amazing.
