Sometimes stacking habits is a superpower.
Sometimes stacking habits is a superpower.
For example, a morning run:
• 60 minutes of Zone 2 cardio
• 60 minutes of an audiobook or podcast
Two habits that overlap well into one block of time. Turn the audiobook up to 2× speed and run shirtless, and that same hour can also include:
• 60 minutes of sunlight (Vitamin D)
• A combined 120 minutes of thoughtful content
Boom. Boom. Boom.
One hour. Cardio. Learning. Sunlight.
I'd make that trade every day.
But optimizing time with my kids is different.
Nothing mixes well.
The moments that deepen our relationship don't come from maximizing efficiency, or "two birds, one stone" type tradeoffs. They come from providing my full, undivided attention.
We still play games, build things, hike, and read together. But those activities aren't the point. My presence is the point.
Knowing when to combine activities is a skill.
Knowing when to protect activities from everything else is also a skill.
Judgement is knowing which one a moment requires.
