During family game night, I proposed a tweak.
During family game night, I proposed a tweak.
We played The Game of Life... but removed the spinner.
Instead of every move being governed by chance,
we replaced it with a deck of UNO cards.
The rules were simple:
• End your turn with at least five cards
• Play the card of your choice
• Move forward the number on the card (WILDs are 0-10)
One small change.
It added agency to the randomness.
The game shifted from:
"Let's see what happens" to
"What do I want to do with what I have?"
Same board.
Same destination.
Different relationship to progress.
That shift is what I wanted my kids to feel.
School provides structure.
So do parents.
Schedules, rules, systems.
Structure is necessary.
But I want them to learn something else as early as possible:
Systems can be questioned, redesigned, and improved.
Life has randomness.
But it also has agency.
We don't control what we're dealt.
We do control how we play our cards.
