Our writing gets stronger when we stop doing the interesting part ourselves and let readers participate.
Yesterday, Luke Baker put it this way:
"Answering your own rhetorical question is like alley-ooping yourself. Not cool."
At first, it reminded me of the sombrero in soccer.
The sombrero is a move where a player flicks the ball over an opponent's head and regains control themself.
At its core, the player is passing to themselves. But the opponent is what makes it difficult. And what makes it cool.
Basketball doesn't allow the same thing.
That's right, no alley-ooping yourself.
Maybe our writing shouldn't either.
