The Colossus of Clout!

The Colossus of Clout!
The Colossus of Clout!

It's often listed among Babe Ruth's many nicknames:

The Sultan of Swat
The King of Crash
The Great Bambino!

But "The Colossus of Clout!" wasn't actually used during The Babe's lifetime. If it was, there isn't evidence. It's most famous, and only definitive, use came decades later in the '90s classic, The Sandlot.

So today, The Colossus of Clout is less a direct reference to Babe Ruth himself and more a nod to the movie that immortalized him for another generation.

That's how culture works.
We inherit stories, retell them, and give old words a new meaning.
The pattern repeats throughout history.
Over time, it's memorability that shapes the legend (over accuracy).

As Babe Ruth, played by Art LaFleur, says in the film:
"Heroes get remembered.
Legends never die."
