The Pareto Principle is wrong. Well... at least it's incomplete.
The Pareto Principle is wrong. Well... at least it's incomplete.
80/20 is the entry point.
Through refinement, the ratios get MUCH more extreme.
In most real systems, value it's evenly distributed.
It gathers in a few places.
As we improve, specialize, and double down on what actually works, the distribution naturally shifts toward 90/10, 95/5, or something even more pronounced.
And we can see it everywhere:
• I work with a nonprofit who gets 85% of its revenue from 5% of donors
• 10% of my posts (1 in 10) produce 95% of impressions
• Recently, a friend traced every (100%) of their W2 jobs to 1 referrer.
So what?
Remove the low leverage work.
Pour energy into the few things that drive results.
Watch the leverage increase.
In the beginning, the challenge is ignorance.
We don't know where the leverage will come from.
Later, the challenge is courage.
The courage to lean into the momentum and prioritize the winners.
80% of the results from 20% of the effort?
The novice wastes energy fighting the principle,
“Surely more of my effort must matter!”
The expert embraces the principle and gets to work,
“So, my task is to find what matters most.”
