This quote has stuck with me for over a decade: Emotional maturity is measured by the gap between stimulus and response.

It stays top of mind for two reasons:
1. it's consistently relevant
2. it's consistently MISUNDERSTOOD

“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space lies our freedom and our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our happiness.”

Stimulus: an external event, thought, or feeling
Response: our reaction to the stimulus

We either respond on impulse (without thought) or with intent (by design).

Now, where is the misunderstanding?

The key insight has nothing to do with speed (timing of response).
It's a lesson about CHOICE.

The size of the gap isn’t measured in seconds.
It’s measured in intention.

- Maturity can slow down to gather more information.
- Maturity can also act immediately, because we thought ahead.

When values, principles, and priorities are clear,
response doesn’t need hesitation but maturity does need intention.
