We like shortcuts.
We like shortcuts.
But not all shortcuts are created equal. Most aren’t shortcuts at all.
Real shortcuts remove waste without compromising the outcome.
You pay the cost once, upfront, and the benefit compounds.
Fake shortcuts feel simple now but only defer the difficulty.
The cost still comes due. Usually with interest.
Vices sit squarely in that category.
Vices offer a cheap version of what we actually want.
They give us temporary relief while the true cost grows in the background.
• Junk food: the cheap version of enjoyment and energy
• Alcohol: the cheap version of confidence, connection, or peace
• Drugs: the cheap version of relief or escape
• Gambling: the cheap version of excitement or adventure
• Doomscrolling: the cheap version of curiosity and learning
We call them entertainment, but that label hides the debt we are accumulating.
We "have them under control"... until we realize they are the ones controlling us.

It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.”
